Project history

The JFK Causeway (SH 358/PR 22) is the only land-based connection between the Corpus Christi mainland and North Padre Island and Mustang Island.

Project delivery begins well before drivers even see construction take place. It begins with a need and an idea - both of which involve stakeholder input, conceptual studies, and, in some cases, funding. Conversations related to what is now referred to as the Regional Parkway - North Padre Island project began several years ago. In fact, the Corpus Christi Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) conducted several route planning studies that have informed TxDOT’s current environmental study. The Corpus Christi MPO is the federally-designated metropolitan planning organization for the greater-Corpus Christi area.

1999: The MPO developed the South Loop Transportation Study which included a proposed corridor that extended to the island via a new crossing of the Laguna Madre.
2013: The MPO, the City of Corpus Christi, Nueces County and San Patricio County sponsored and completed the Regional Parkway Mobility Corridor Feasibility Studywhich recommended a single corridor divided into seven segments from I-37 to PR 22.
2017: The MPO and the City of Corpus Christi developed the Regional Parkway Planning and Environmental Linkages (PEL) Studywhich further refined two of the original seven segments from the 2013 feasibility study.
