Project to make roadway, safety improvements to US 84
LAMB COUNTY — Next week, TxDOT will begin work to make roadway and safety improvements to 27 miles of US 84 in Lamb and Lubbock counties. The $25.8 million project will make pavement repairs to various locations, place a new road surface, install median cable barrier, add traffic signals and high mast lighting to US 84 at SL 430 in Littlefield.
“The project will be making needed improvements and repairs to the pavement and is expected to enhance the overall safety of the roadway,” said Neil Welch, TxDOT Littlefield Area engineer. “Project contractor A.L. Helmcamp, Inc., of Buffalo, TX, is scheduled to begin work March 17 in Lamb County installing the median cable barrier. A second crew is scheduled to begin pavement work in Lubbock County.”
The work will require various daytime and overnight lane closures. Speed limits in the active work zone will be reduced to 65 mph, Welch noted.
The project also includes work to install cable median barriers, which are designed to stop vehicles from crossing the open median and prevent the worst kinds of crashes, including head-on collisions.
“To increase safety and reduce traffic conflict points, the project will also remove several crossovers along the project limits,” Welch said.
Drivers can expect delays with the road down to one-lane of traffic. Motorists are asked to stay alert, slow down and drive with caution through the area for their safety and the safety of our workers.
