TxDOT celebrates the opening of the first flyover ramp on the Loop 1604 North Expansion

SAN ANTONIO – TxDOT celebrated the opening of the first flyover ramp on the Loop 1604 North Expansion with a ribbon cutting ceremony today. The flyover ramp is part of Segment 2 of the expansion project that includes $463 million of transportation improvements to transform the Loop 1604 & I-10 interchange into a 5-level, innovative design that will improve connectivity and mobility for San Antonio drivers.
With the cutting of a ribbon and an inaugural drive of the flyover ramp, Texas Transportation Commission Chairman J. Bruce Bugg, Jr. led the ceremony. He was joined by Senator José Menéndez, TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams, Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai, TxDOT San Antonio District Engineer Charles Benavidez, P.E. and other key transportation stakeholders.
“I am very excited to celebrate the opening of the first flyover ramp of the Loop 1604 North Expansion,” said Chairman Bugg. “This milestone signifies major progress as part of our work on the Texas Clear Lanes initiative to improve mobility and tackle congestion on the most congested corridors in the state.”
Opening to traffic by 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 3, the flyover ramp will provide an easier connection for drivers traveling from eastbound Loop 1604 to westbound I-10.
“Today is a great day for San Antonio. As promised, we are opening the first flyover ramp at the Loop 1604 & I-10 interchange before the end of the year,” Benavidez said. “With 60% of Segment 2 complete, we remain committed to delivering improvements to drivers as they are ready with at least two more flyovers opening in 2025.”
Segment 2 of the Loop 1604 North Expansion began construction in late summer 2022 and is expected to be complete in 2027. STV is the project’s construction engineering and inspection (CEI) consultant and Williams Brothers Construction is the contractor.
Background
The Loop 1604 North Expansion is a Texas Clear Lanes project aimed at improving mobility and reducing congestion along 23 miles of Loop 1604 from SH 16 (Bandera Rd.) to I-35. This project brings $1.4 billion of transportation investments including the expansion of mainlanes from a 4- to 10-lane expressway, high-occupancy-vehicle (HOV) lanes in each direction, a multi-level interchange at the I-10 interchange, an innovative intersection at Blanco Rd., and bicycle and pedestrian accommodations along the frontage roads.
The Loop 1604 North Expansion is planned in six segments with four segments currently under construction.
- Segment 1, from SH 16 to I-10, is on schedule to be complete and open to traffic by early 2025.
- Segment 2, the Loop 1604 and I-10 interchange, is on schedule to be complete by 2027 with additional flyover ramps opening in 2025.
- Segment 3, from I-10 to US 281, is on schedule to be complete by the end of 2025.
- Segment 4, from US 281 to Redland Rd., began construction April 2024.
