US 83/277 at FM 3034

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), in conjunction with the Abilene MPO, has identified the intersection of US 83/277 at FM 3034 as a priority for safety improvements. As part of the overall plan to improve the safety and operation of the corridor, a proposed grade separation will serve to enhance the movement of traffic at the intersection of FM 3034. The proposed project is 0.9 miles in Taylor and Jones counties.

Planned improvements

The proposed project will consist of building an overpass over the FM 3034 intersection. Entrance and exit ramps will be provided for access to the intersection. FM 3034 will be realigned to reduce utility conflicts and the intersection will be re-built to the north of the existing intersection. Motorists will no longer have a conflict with high-speed cross traffic that will now be on the bridge structure above. This project will require the purchase of right-of-way (ROW) with no impact to building structures. The cost of ROW acquisition and utility relocation is to be determined.

Project update

FNF Construction, Inc. was awarded the project on July 31, 2024.  The awarded amount is $39.5 million to construct a new interchange, widen, and rehabilitate US 83 at FM 3034. Construction began in October 2024 and the project is estimated for completion in spring 2027.
