US 183 from SH 71 to SH 130

The Texas Department of Transportation is conducting a study to explore potential enhancements to US 183 from SH 71 to SH 130.

The existing 4-lane highway is divided from SH 71 to FM 812, and undivided from FM 812 to SH 130. Multiple neighborhoods, businesses and other structures are located along or in close proximity to the corridor, and the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is adjacent to the highway.

TxDOT is proposing to widen and divide US 183 from SH 71 to SH 130 with community support to address congestion and make needed improvements.

Study overview

The population of the Austin area has grown significantly in recent years. This has resulted in the need for transportation improvements.

As part of the study, goals and objectives will be established and potential improvements will be identified and evaluated to enhance safety, access, and mobility within the project area. It will include the environmental studies and documentation necessary to comply with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969. The study will conclude with the identification of a recommended alternative.

TxDOT will actively engage the surrounding communities throughout the study process, and there will be several opportunities for the public to provide input. By encouraging participation and community-wide dialogue, transportation improvements that minimize community impacts and reflect community values can be identified.

Schedule

TxDOT’s schematic design was completed in July 2024. The ROW acquisition will begin mid-2025 and is anticipated to be complete late 2026/early 2027.  FM 812 was broken into three segments:

  • US 183 to SH 130, including a portion of FM 973
  • SH 130 to Peterson Road
  • 0.32 miles east of Elroy Road to SH 21

Utility adjustments are anticipated to begin late 2025.  All three segments are currently under design.  The anticipated letting date for the segment between SH 130 and Peterson Road is late 2027.  The anticipated letting date for the remaining two segments is late 2031.

*Dates are contingent on funding

Public involvement

When the study fully resumes, there will be numerous opportunities for the public to provide input and feedback regarding the study and the potential improvements. Opportunities will include public meetings, one-on-one and small group stakeholder meetings, as well as a public hearing.
