FM 974 (Tabor Road) at SH 6 intersection modifications
TxDOT’s Bryan District is developing plans to improve the FM 974 at SH 6 intersection from Shirley Drive to the SH 6 southbound frontage road in Brazos County, Texas. The proposed intersection modifications along FM 974 would enhance safety, increase intersection capacity, and relieve congestion by improving traffic flow.
The project is being developed to meet current and future traffic demand at the intersection, maintain consistency such as driver expectations along SH 6 frontage roads, and update the roadway to current design standards.
Proposed improvements
The existing FM 974 is a two-lane roadway, one lane in each direction, with narrow shoulders and a center turn lane at the SH 6 underpass area. There are currently no sidewalks along FM 974 near the intersection.
Proposed intersection modifications include:
- Widening Tabor Road as it approaches the SH 6 northbound frontage road intersection to provide a dedicated right turn lane, an additional through lane and a center turn lane.
- Adding an additional dedicated left turn lane from Tabor Road to the SH 6 southbound frontage road and a new left turn lane to the northbound frontage road in the SH 6 underpass area.
- Reconfiguring the SH 6 southbound frontage road at Wilkes Street to one-way only—includes removal of the northbound Tabor Road segment and left-turn from Tabor Road to Wilkes Street.
- Adjusting signal timing for the SH 6 southbound frontage road at Wilkes Street intersection to provide more green time for the remaining intersection movements.
- Constructing a 10-foot wide shared use path on Tabor Road from Shirley Drive to the SH 6 southbound frontage road for pedestrians and bicyclists that would connect to the existing shared use path network on Wilkes Street.
Right-of-way acquisition is needed for this project and TxDOT is actively working with impacted property owners. TxDOT anticipates design plans to be completed by summer 2025 with construction starting in early 2026
