SH 6 Central BCS
TxDOT, in partnership with the Bryan-College Station Metropolitan Planning Organization, is proposing improvements to SH 6 from US 190/SH 21 to SH 40.
SH 6 is a vital north-south highway and serves as a major commuter route for Bryan, College Station, Texas A&M University, Brazos County, and the region. It is part of the Texas Highway Freight Network, the Texas Highway Trunk System and is a Hurricane Evacuation Route. The existing corridor consists of two lanes in each direction separated by either a grassy median or concrete traffic barrier, intermittent auxiliary lanes, and limited sidewalks and bicycle accommodations.
Goals
The goals of the project are to enhance safety, relieve congestion, and improve mobility.
Proposed improvements include expanding the main lanes from four to six lanes (three in each direction), improving auxiliary lane configurations and adding collector-distributor lanes at selected locations for safer and more efficient merging, improving interchanges for more efficient traffic flow, and providing shared use paths for bicycles and pedestrians.
TxDOT is working closely with local stakeholders, Bryan/College Station Metropolitan Planning Organization and the public, to receive their input regarding project development. See below for past and ongoing public involvement efforts, as well as additional project information.
Current status
The project is anticipated to begin construction in the summer of 2025.
