SH 361 Mustang Island Project

The Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) Corpus Christi District is proposing improvements to State Highway (SH) 361 in Nueces County from Access Road 1 in Port Aransas to Park Road 22 in Corpus Christi.

Proposed improvements

TxDOT’s Corpus Christi District is proposing to widen SH 361 to a four-lane highway with two travel lanes in each direction, raised center medians with left turn lanes as needed, and a sidewalk/shared use path. The proposed project is approximately 15 miles in length and would be designed to improve safety and mobility along SH 361. Additional right of way (ROW) is anticipated to be needed. However, the project is in the preliminary stage of design and input from the public is being requested before potential ROW impacts are identified.

Preliminary design and environmental studies are underway. The purpose of these activities is to develop and evaluate roadway alignment options, take into consideration public input, and determine the potential impacts the proposed project would have on the environment and community.

The existing SH 361 from Access Road 1 to Park Road 22 consists of a two-lane highway with one 12-foot-wide travel lane in each direction and 10-foot shoulders on both sides. At various locations, SH 361 has one 11-foot travel lane in each direction with an 11-foot passing lane in the center and 8-foot shoulders on both sides. There are no existing sidewalks, bicycle, or pedestrian facilities.

Mustang Island is home to permanent year-round residents and many seasonal visitors. SH 361 is the only land route from Port Aransas to Corpus Christi and beyond, providing critical evacuation under extreme weather conditions.

Project updates and public involvement

The purpose of public involvement is to share project information, present project updates, and gather public input. TxDOT is committed to working closely with the public on this project. Public input will be considered as TxDOT moves forward in developing a plan to improve the safety and mobility of this corridor.
