I-20 6-Lane Expansion Project

Project map

I-20 expansion map going through Canton, Smith, and Gregg counties

Project overview

TxDOT is developing preliminary plans to widen and reconstruct the I-20 corridor throughout East Texas (ETX) in the Tyler District through Smith, Gregg, and Van Zandt counties from Kaufman County line, east, to the Harrison County line. The overall project length is approximately 82 miles.

The project originated with the I-20 East Texas Corridor Study, completed in 2014, and builds upon the I-20 Texas Corridor Study completed in 2023. The I-20 ETX corridor expansion would widen and reconstruct entrance and exit ramps, replace mainlane and frontage road bridges. Enhancements are aimed at improving safety, reducing long-term congestion, and  preserving the existing highway.

Details

Enhancements to this corridor include:

  • Widening from a four to six-lane highway to provide three travel lanes in each direction
  • Redesigning the horizontal and vertical alignments to meet current design standards and enhance safety
  • Reconfiguring ramps and interchanges to meet current design standards
  • Adding paired one-way frontage roads
  • Converting existing two-way frontage roads to one-way operations

This project will include the acquisition of new proposed right of way from adjacent property owners.  The proposed right of way required is still under development.

Schedule

This project is in its initial development phase. No construction funds are identified at this time, and there is no current timeframe for when right-of-way needs will be determined. TxDOT will continue to work on its preliminary plans and engage the public for feedback on the design. Updates on the project’s development and public engagement opportunities will be published here as they become available.
