I-45 innovative corridor
Cooperative and Automated Transportation (CAT)
What is an innovative corridor?
An innovative corridor is a transportation route that aims to enhance the safety, mobility, reliability, and resiliency of road users through the use of emerging technology. The corridor accelerates the adoption of cooperative and automated transportation to support current road users in addition to connected and automated vehicles.
I-45 corridor
The I-45 corridor serves as a platform to demonstrate and evaluate solutions identified in the Cooperative and Automated Transportation (CAT) program. The project will explore near, short and long-term solutions aimed at implementation of emerging technologies and innovations to enable and improve user experience of both autonomous vehicle (AV) and traditional vehicle with focus on:

Work zone management
System of planning, coordination, and implementation of measures to safely and efficiently manage traffic and activities in areas where road construction, maintenance, or other work operations are taking place. Work zone management aims to ensure safety, reduce delays, and improve the overall effectiveness of the work being done.
Traffic Incident Management
Ability to detect, respond to, and clear traffic incidents such as crashes or debris to minimizes their impact on traffic flow, reduces congestion, and enhances safety for both responders and road users. Traffic Incident Management aims to quickly address incidents to restore normal traffic conditions, reduce secondary accidents, and prevent long-lasting disruptions.

Preventative infrastructure
Design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure systems that are proactively built to minimize future risks, reduce the need for maintenance, and enhance long-term durability. Preventative Infrastructure is a proactive approach to infrastructure management, emphasizing prevention rather than reactive solutions.
Project limit
The project covers 216 Miles of I-45 between IH-20 and Beltway 8 North covering three TxDOT Districts: Dallas (64 miles), Bryan (112 miles) and Houston (40 miles).

Initiatives

Commercial motor vehicle safety alerts
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has taken proactive steps to improve commercial motor vehicle (CMV) safety through its collaboration with INRIX, a global leader in traffic data and mobility analytics, providing real-time traffic information and alerts of sudden slowdown and congestion to Electronic Logging Devices (ELD) of Drivewyze partners. Through a successful pilot program along I-45, TxDOT has now sent alerts on all tier 1 road in the state of Texas.
