Brand review checklist

This checklist highlights requirements for communication materials. It’s a practical tool for staff and contractors to use when preparing communication materials. Following these checks ensure your work is on-brand and accessible.

Visual identity

Colors

  • Use official TxDOT brand colors. 
    • Do not use unapproved colors.
  • Primary color used must be TxDOT blue.
    • Other than white or black, TxDOT primary blue must be the predominant color. 
  • Color contrast meets accessibility guidelines. 

Logos

  • Use an approved TxDOT logo.
  • Minimum size requirement is met.
  • Minimum clear space requirement is met.
  • No unapproved logos used, like low-resolution images or non-TxDOT logos.
  • External organization logos must have contract or sponsorship agreement in place to display external logos (if applicable).

Typography/Font

  • Approved brand fonts are used consistently.
  • Font sizes are large enough to ensure legibility and meet accessibility guidelines. 
  • No unapproved fonts.

Brand application

Brand Templates

  • Preference for official brand templates to ensure consistent layout, typography, and accessibility.
  • Build content within the template’s structure by using the provided layouts and styles.
  • Follow brand guidelines when official brand template cannot be used.
    • Official brand templates available on TxDOT intranet.

Content and messaging

  • Calls to action are present and easy to find
    • Include calls to action where applicable to enhance engagement.
  • Acronyms and technical terms are defined or in plain language.
    • This is important for public-facing content.
  • Content supports TxDOT’s mission.

Layout and design

  • Use headlines sizes to create a clear hierarchy, applied in a consistent and logical order, to guide user and meet accessibility requirements.
  • Spacing, margins, alignment follow a clean and consistent structure.
  • Avoid numerous decorative visual elements that decrease readability.
  • Backgrounds and overlays do not reduce readability.

Legal and regulatory

  • All required legal and regulatory content is included. 
    • Content and document authors are responsible for content accuracy. 
  • Disclaimers, privacy notices, and compliance text are present, if applicable.
  • Do not use copyright, trademarked, or external content is used without express written permission. 

Photography and graphics

  • Follow photography and image guidance.
  • Don't use unlicensed, low-quality, or clip art-style visuals.
  • Preference for icons to use editorial and reference icons styles.
  • Use Texas‑based images when representing the state of Texas, TxDOT in general, and our infrastructure. 
    • Images from outside the state should be limited to generic concepts where location is irrelevant (e.g., abstract concepts, safety icons, etc.).

Design accessibility

  • Use design accessibility checklist.
  • Important: Document authors are responsible for ensuring documents meet applicable accessibility requirements.
